Transitions can be a tricky proposition and popular sports journalist, Mitali Ghoshal’s turn to filmmaking with 22 Yards is a classic example. Her film has insights from the world of sports agents and struggling cricketers, but the film severely lacks the finesse and depth needed for an engaging storytelling effort. The lead man, Barun Sobti’s performance is also inconsistent and can’t make up for the lacklustre execution.

22 Yards takes familiar plot points as seen in films like Jerry Maguire (1996) and The Blind Side (2009) and puts them into the story of a sports agent based in Kolkata. Ron Sen commands power and respect from the biggest stars and names in Indian cricket, but his swag and standing take a strong beating when he gets caught up in controversy. He finds new faith in a disheartened cricketer Shome, and the young man’s pursuit to realising his own dream. While the story holds promise, the shoddy execution foils the potential of the film. The cinematography and editing in particular look very amatuer. The newbie director finds it hard to get a hold of the story at hand.
There are a host of familiar faces in the cast like Barun Sobti, Rajit Kapur and Panchi Bora, while there are also fresh names like Amartya Ray and Chaitali Ghosal, but not one actor is able to leave a lasting impact. The meandering screenplay and the tired storytelling take a toll on this feature film. This sports drama turns out to be as dodgy as a tailender’s batting.
