In Lisaa, a young woman, the titular Lisaa, played by Anjali, goes to meet her estranged grandparents, who are living in “western ghats”. Yes, that’s how specific the film is. She takes a friend, Jaggu (Sam Jones) along with her – because, why not? The grandparents (which includes a hammy Makrand Deshpande) act so weird, like popping a loaded gun into their mouth and playing Russian roulette, that any sane person would immediately be apprehensive about being with such individuals. Then there are the supernatural occurances!
But Lisaa is undeterred, for she wants to get her mother, their daughter, married again, and will not stop until these elders give their approval. Predictably, soon things turn life-threateningly serious for her and Jaggu.
Lifting the premise of Manoj Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, director Raju Viswanath has come up with a horror thriller that lacks any sense of mood-building or momentum. The scene segues are jarring and the horror elements derivate and hardly scary. To make matters worse, we get a force-fitted message in the end that sticks out like a sore thumb. With cardboard characters and storytelling that lacks depth, even 3D doesn’t save this film.
