Review: Set against the backdrop of a small town, Maniyar Kudumbam narrates the story of a reputed family, which once commanded huge respect from villagers. The family of four is now headed by Nadhagarsamy (Thambi Ramaiah). A lethargic person by nature, he has pinned hopes on his son Kuttimani (Umapathy). Knowing that the latter is in love with Magizham Poo (Mrudula), a relative of theirs, Nadhagarsamy sets out to meet Magizham’s father with a few people from their village. However, they get insulted by the girl’s father (Jayaprkash) as he finds Nadhagarsamy and Kuttimani jobless. Quite disappointed with the same, both of them convince villagers about starting a wind mill project, and all of them together contribute a sum of one crore. But the father-son duo get cheated when a cab driver steal the amount, following which the villagers threaten them of serious repercussions.

The film has a decent story which is enough to engage the audience, but the execution falls flat. The attempt to present Umapathy as a commercial hero partly succeeds, as he shows grace in dance and fight sequences. The performances by Thambi Ramaiah and Jayaprakash are good, but the flow of events should have been more gripping. The duration is a plus for the film, so are the emotions and family bonding. The chemistry between the lead pairs, too, isn’t bad. Other artistes like Vivek and Pawan score in certain scenes, while Samuthirakani’s cameo as a cop deserved more screen space. Barring a few clichéd scenes and predictability factor, Maniyar Kudumbam is an okayish attempt for those who love family dramas.
