Set against Nellai backdrop, Nedunalvaadai is a film which has got its emotions at the right place. Barring some clichéd moments which are quite predictable in stories that unfold in rural milieu, the film has some good performances from its artistes. The film’s story revolves around the bonding of a grandfather and his grandson. Elango, who had the responsibility to take care of his mother and sister since younger days, was brought up by his grandfather (Poo Ramu), who is a naïve farmer in the village. Having looked down upon by his maternal uncle (Mime Gopi) from his childhood, he always craved for a good life.
But there occurs a situation where he is confused about choosing between his family and lover after he falls in love with a girl (Anjali Nair) from his village. His grandfather warns him about the repercussions of going after a girl when his family needs his time and attention. However, Elango can’t let go her off as he believes that her influence has made his life so easy. Will he listen to his grandfather?
Poo Ramu’s performance as the dutiful grandfather is the backbone of the film, which is supported by decent acting by Anjali and an okayish show by Elango. Mime Gopi appears in a role which is tailor-made for him, but doesn’t leave an impact as the story progresses, thanks to the underutilisation of his character. A good amount of detailing has been done in various scenes, including getting the Nellai dialect right. Though the love track doesn’t follow the usual template, there are moments where one could anticipate how certain scenes turn out to be. Despite a few shortcomings, the film will work for those who love rural dramas which have ample dose of family bonding and relationships.
